Requirements:

  • Degree: Certificate from an academic program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Certification: Certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the specialty identified in the task order.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience as a sonographer in the specialty area identified in the task order.

 

Job Responsibilties:

  • Patient Interaction: Correlate the patient's clinical history with the requested examination, obtain the results from previous pertinent diagnostic tests, and consult with staff physicians regarding the patient's history and examination.
  • Diagnostic Imaging: Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations as appropriate to the discipline and facility requirements.
  • Image Quality Assurance: Ensure the quality of the images produced and make necessary adjustments to ultrasound equipment.
  • Procedure Explanation: Explain the ultrasound process to patients, instructing and assisting them in assuming the correct physical position for the examination.
  • Record Keeping: Document arrival, departure, and completion of tests as required by medical facility policy. Send appropriate image series to the radiologist for reading according to protocol.
  • System Maintenance: Perform system warm-ups, calibrations, and quality control tasks according to manufacturer and medical facility policy. Recognize artifacts and equipment errors, and notify designated personnel of outlying values.
  • Emergency Response: Identify abnormalities during testing and determine the need for additional scans of the affected area. Recognize the need for and initiate emergency measures for critical situations such as respiratory or cardiac arrest.
  • Patient Care: Assist in the compiling and archiving of records for procedures performed. Observe and report any symptoms which have a direct bearing on the patient's condition as a result of adverse reactions to contrast media, and inform the radiologist of any conditions requiring attention.
