Requirements:
- Nursing Assistants must have experience in the field.
- Those working in Acute Locked Psychiatry must have current ProAct or equivalent MAB training and certification.
- Provides direct nursing care under the supervision of a VA Registered Nurse.
- Follows directions, determines priorities in basic patient care, and utilizes organizational and observational skills.
- Reports to VA RN responsible for the team of patients.
- May report through an LPN/LVN to the RN.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as a member of the nursing staff, providing routine nursing care and personal services to patients.
- Assists with activities of daily living (feeding, bathing, lifting, turning patients) and performs hygiene care.
- Records all care provided in the clinical records.
- Observes physical and emotional changes in patients, reporting and documenting findings.
- Assists in diagnostic support duties (taking vital signs, collecting specimens, preparing patients for tests, exams, treatments, and surgery).
- Performs treatment procedures such as changing dressings, enemas, colostomy and tracheotomy care, and care for patients in isolation or under continuous observation.
- Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment, following universal precautions.
- Recognizes emergency situations (cardiopulmonary arrest, choking, seizures, dysreflexia, etc.) and takes appropriate action.
- Assists patients on diagnostic or therapeutic trips, assuming responsibility within the scope of a Nursing Assistant.
- Initiates emergency measures to control disruptive or violent behavior.
- Assists in patient care as directed by an RN or LPN/LVN.
- Respects patient rights, including privacy and dignity.
- Follows VA customer service standards, maintaining professional and respectful conduct.
