Job Requirements - The Phlebotomist will have the following requirements:
- Certificate/Graduate from an academic course of phlebotomy that includes 120 didactic hours (or required by state law).
- Basic Life Support certification
- Certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASC5) or AMT
- Completed 1040 hours as a Phlebotomy Technician within past 3 years. Must have performed 50 successful venipuncture and 10 successful skin punctures.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Verifies proper patient preparation for tests requested by the provider
collection procedure and sample transport requirements. - Collects blood samples from outpatients using aseptic techniques
- Recognizes and notes unusual patient conditions that may cause erroneous test
results. - Takes capillary blood samples from patients’ fingers and heels. Uses preventative
techniques to alleviate the risk of hematoma and nerve injury. - Observes the patient for any signs or symptoms of physiological reactions after
blood collection and takes appropriate emergency response measures to prevent
injury and stabilize the patient and alerts supervisor when serious reaction or
emergency conditions exist.
