Spectrum Healthcare Resources has an excellent opportunity for a Civilian Laboratory Assistant supporting Dumfries Ambulatory Care Center in Dumfries, Virginia. This position offers the unique chance to provide high-quality care to our nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families—without the typical pressures of the commercial healthcare setting.
The Laboratory Assistant provides laboratory services in support of patient care and treatment within a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Prepare the phlebotomy area, ensuring adequate laboratory and administrative supplies are stocked
Assist providers and nursing staff with test ordering
Perform venous and capillary punctures for patients of all ages, from newborns to elderly
Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality, and rights at all times
Interact courteously and professionally with patients and staff
Label specimens accurately and confirm alignment with laboratory requests
Handle and dispose of needles, sharps, and biohazardous waste according to clinic policies
Follow infection control procedures during all patient interactions
Support the Laboratory Supervisor and Technicians with assigned duties
Promote a safe and organized laboratory environment by maintaining cleanliness and clear workspaces
Collect and process specimens, including blood, as directed
Maintain laboratory equipment and cleanliness
Requisition supplies to ensure adequate inventory levels
Accurately document test logs and track in-house and reference lab requests
Perform other duties and cleaning/maintenance tasks as assigned, with proper documentation
Ensure proper record keeping and compliance with all policies and procedures
High school diploma or GED equivalent required
Graduation from an approved/accredited phlebotomy training program leading to a nationally recognized certification (ASPT, ASCP, or equivalent)
One year of related experience preferred
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
Basic computer skills with proficiency in word processing, data entry, and electronic medical records
Regular and punctual attendance
Frequent walking, standing, and bending
Occasional lifting and carrying of medical equipment or files
Moderate stress environment
May require extended hours during critical deadlines
Prolonged use of computer and telephone
Consistent daytime schedule — no evenings or on-call
