The use of correct medical terminology is necessary to appropriately receive, organize, prioritize, and transmit information and serve the laboratory’s liaison with patients and medical staff members. • Collect blood samples from patients. • Ensures specimens are collected in the amount and type of specimen required (e.g., with or without a particular anticoagulant) for each laboratory test. • Practice proper patient identification, especially when working on hospital floors. • Instructs patients on collection of specimens using collection instructions (e.g., semen samples, stool samples, etc.). • Dresses the skin puncture site after blood collection.
